About 11.8 million of New York’s 19.9 million people live in the ten counties that make up the state’s share of the New York City metro. Five of the eleven cities in the state above 60,000 people sit inside it: New York City itself, and Yonkers, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon and White Plains in Westchester County. On Long Island the largest communities are towns rather than cities, and Hempstead alone is larger than any city in the state except New York City.
Upstate runs as four metros of its own rather than one region. Buffalo and Rochester each hold just over a million people, the Capital Region around Albany, Schenectady and Troy just over 900,000, and Syracuse about 650,000. A search in Buffalo draws on different people than a search in White Plains.
