The local market
Three regions,
with Nashville
out in front
Tennessee law divides the state into three regions, East, Middle and West, and its 7.2 million people are not spread evenly across them. West Tennessee centers on Memphis, Middle Tennessee on Nashville, and East Tennessee runs from Chattanooga up through Knoxville to the Tri-Cities. The Nashville metro alone holds 2.15 million people, and it added about 136,000 between 2020 and 2024, more than four in ten of the state’s new residents.
Five of the eleven Tennessee cities above 60,000 people sit inside that metro: Nashville, Murfreesboro, Franklin, Hendersonville and Smyrna, which passed 60,000 after 2020. Over the same years the Memphis metro held roughly flat, and the Knoxville metro grew nearly as fast as Nashville’s on a smaller base.
Proof
A Cookeville client
Landon Vick, CFP®, is a financial advisor with Raymond James in Cookeville, which anchors a four-county area of about 150,000 people on Interstate 40 between Nashville and Knoxville. He has run his practice for more than 15 years, and he is now on his fourth hire with us.
As my business has grown, I’ve seen how critical it is to do the things that I can do best and delegate the rest. Hiring is no exception. I’m now on my 4th hire with Humans Being Resources and couldn’t be happier with my experience working with the company. For each hire, I’ve used their Elite package, which means that when I finally sit down with a candidate, they’ve already been vetted and tested to ensure they are an ideal fit for the position. Before I interview a candidate, I can review a substantial amount of valuable information, which makes my time with them far more productive. Throughout the process, HBR gives me counsel and advice to ensure that I’m complying with laws and making a good decision and offer. Don’t waste your time doing something you don’t like and aren’t any good at, I hope that’s clear enough, call HBR!

What that means for a search
Franklin pays
differently
from Cookeville
Pay for the same role does not carry across Tennessee. A client service associate in Franklin or Brentwood is on a different band from the same job in Cookeville or Jackson, and an offer built on a statewide average is the one that gets turned down.
Outside the big metros the pool is smaller. Around Cookeville there are fewer experienced candidates within driving distance, so the search has to reach people who are not looking at job boards at all.
Getting that right is part of what the fee pays for. We research what the role pays in your part of the state before the ad goes out, then go directly to people already doing the job well nearby.
